In the making of a fiction film, what makes the story interesting and able to amaze the audience is drama which animate the facts and create a character to be remembered. Drama reinforces action and suspense. Drama always followed by conflict. Conflict in a story contains something or someone who struggles against something. Conflict builds action and suspense. At the time of starting to build the character, it will come into contact with other sides of the character’s emotion. To explore a character, then raised interesting things, frightening and memorable. Departing from the idea of ​​a mythical story that often develops about other worlds (ghosts), and the fear and nervous nature that always exist in every person then the creator visualizes it in the form of a fiction film “The Absent”.

The formulation of creation issues raised in this work are: 1) How to build conflict through the characterization of the main character in the fiction film “The Absent”? 2) How is directing in the fiction film “The Absent” so that it can build conflict through characterizing the main character?

The method used in this work is through several stages of creation that begins with the idea of ​​creation, the planning stage by conducting literature studies and observations of student behavior, the implementation stage of pre-production, production and post-production.

In the embodiment and discussion of the work used several theories and concepts of the concept of fiction films; theory that supports technical directing consisting of the five C’s pf cinematography theory, visual design, sound design, performance style, editorial style; the concept of conflict that is psychological, inner action and freud theory. Can be concluded in building conflict through characterizing the main character using a straight story plot or linear plot that focuses the audience on the central character of the main actor; technical directing in constructing conflicts through the cast of key actors with dramatic compositions, shooting with POV, dynamic camera motion and continuous editing as well as merging two shots via voice track or musical score.
